The wedding cake is one of the most fun parts of wedding planning and it shouldn't be stressful or put pressure on you!
Booking your chosen cake maker well in advance is crucial for ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience when organising your wedding cake. By enquiring early, you have a better chance of securing your wedding date and avoiding disappointment. Furthermore, advanced booking allows you plenty of time to discuss your design preferences, try different cake flavours, have your consultation and perhaps discuss different drafts of the final design. All these steps ensure that your cake will be tailored perfectly to your needs.
Below, I’ve highlighted some key factors to consider when you’re thinking about booking your wedding cake that may affect how soon you should start making enquiries.
Cake complexity and design requirements
If you already have a design in mind and it’s elaborate, it will take more planning to execute perfectly, particularly if it involves ordering specialist elements or liaising with other suppliers.
If you are looking for something relatively ‘simple’ it may be possible for a faster turnaround depending on the cake maker’s availability.
Your perception of ‘simple’ might not be the same as ours though, so it’s always better to check!
Seasonal demand and popular event dates
Did you know that there is a wedding season? It may not surprise you that most weddings take
place between Spring and Autumn. Wedding cake makers get booked up quickly as most
have limited capacity. It’s highly advisable to get your cake secured as soon as possible after you have booked your venue.
Due to the lower number of weddings during winter, you may have the advantage of booking your cake artist with shorter notice, unless it’s in the run up to Christmas.
If you are hoping to get married over national holidays such as Christmas or New Year, there are fewer cake makers to choose from as not all will work over these periods, so it’s definitely vital to scope out who’s open and who has availability.
The reputation and popularity of the cake designer
There are countless cake makers in the UK, all with a different range of abilities and experience. If you have your heart set on a specific cake artist, get in touch with them as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. If they are well established and in high demand, they could well be taking bookings 1-2 years in advance. In this case, you might even want to check their availability before setting your date with the venue.
Trying wedding cake samples
We've had the pleasure of serving many couples who confidently book their date without the need for cake sampling. They've placed their trust in our reputation and experience, and we truly appreciate that. On the other hand, we completely understand and respect the preferences of couples who prefer to explore various cake designers before making a decision.
The only thing about this is that you need to wait until the samples are made. A lot of cake makers only make their cake samples every month or every two months (like us). Some cake makers don’t make samples during peak wedding season at all and only make them during low season.
You could well be waiting for months before you can then make a decision and secure your date at which point it might not be available anymore.
Overall
For the best experience, we recommend booking your wedding cake 10-18 months in advance.
We have accommodated a few wedding cakes within 6 weeks before, but this is very rushed and doesn’t allow you to have the best experience as you are limited on what is available to you.
In conclusion, planning ahead and booking your wedding cake maker in good time ensures a stress-free and personalised experience. By securing their services early, you avoid any last-minute hiccups and have the opportunity to discuss your unique preferences, creating a dream wedding cake that perfectly complements your special day. With the perfect cake in place, your wedding will be even more memorable and sweet, leaving you and your guests with delightful moments to cherish forever!
